New Years Resolutions - RPGs

Apologies! I owe you all three posts as I have missed the last two weeks! I plan to knock out a few posts in short order, starting with my resolutions regarding playing some RPGs this year! Unlike my miniature post, I figure that three goals is more realistic.

  • Play Mother Ship
    • It is so long since I GM'ed and I don't have a regular group. I figure that a short campaign of Mother Ship may help me ID potential members for a new group. I'll talk more about my thoughts on Mother Ship later, but after reading the rules I'm pretty stoked to run this game. I also picked up a copy of Dead Planet, so I already have a scenario in the hopper.
  • Play a Free League Publishing Game
    • Based on the Forbidden Lands and Vessen products I already own, I absolutely love Free League books. They both are gorgeous and engaging to read, and I'm torn between which to ultimately run. Regardless, once I wrangle up a dedicated group of players with Mother Ship, I'll transition them into playing one of these two.
  • Start a campaign with my kids
    • My soon to be nine year old daughter keeps asking me to play D&D with her again. We played a mini campaign early last year and I had promised her that we would play more soon. My biggest hurdle is indecision, I can't figure out which game and setting I want to play with her. I also need to keep in mind my five year old son as he can become frustrated when others play any game that he can't belong to so will most likely have to include him!

That's it for my RPG goals this year. You can expect updates as I make moves on them in the future. Any thing RPG related that you are itching to do this year?

New Years Resolutions - Miniature Wargaming

As is customary for January blog posts, I figured a new years resolutions regarding all my hobby projects is a good start here. While resolution posts are entertaining, they also help focus ones goals towards completing hobby projects and perhaps playing some actual games! I noticed this while listing potential projects that I had interest in. The list contained 33 different games that I wanted to explore... obviously unrealistic given regular life responsibilities as well as other hobby interests. After generating some rating criteria and some good old fashion soul searching, I narrowed down this list to five projects that will keep me busy this year!

  • Star Wars Legion : Paint up a full 800 pt Vader list, complete a standard sized gaming table with a desert theme, and play a game with everything together.
    • This was a no brainier. My buddy Joey and I played a few games already with a core box that I got a while ago. We both enjoyed it. He even decided to take the plunge and invest by buying two core boxes of Clone Wars. Since he is the one that I game with the most, this project is a priority. I already painted up a core box,  so the project is already started! I got a second core box for Christmas so next on the to do list. In addition to fielding a full army, both of us want to play on a table that we created. He has a FDM 3d printer, so our plan is to buy a gaming mat and then print up our own terrain. He will print, and I'll paint. I'm sure we will play some small games first, but at end the year we will hopefully be able to play a full point game with painted pieces.
  • Warcry : Play through a campaign, paint the terrain from the first box set.
    • I received a box set a year ago for my birthday and manged to paint up all the models within the year. Now the only thing left is paint up the terrain. I started this about a month ago, and feel like I'm almost at the halfway mark. Not sure who I will play the campaign with though. I might reach out to to the local game store or club. Or maybe start something with local friends. Regardless, I hope to play through a full campaign.
  • Arena Rex : Finish painting Leo, have painted terrain, play three matches with two starter boxes.
    • I bought two starter boxes and Leo two years ago at PAX Unplugged because the models are gorgeous and the mechanics seam cool. Both starter boxes are fully painted ready. I just want to add some 3d terrain to the mix. I also started Leo, so I should be able to finish him soon. I hope to play three matches, as this is a good number to judge if I want to invest more into this game.
  • Carnevale : Paint up two gangs to 150 ducats, play through a full campaign
    • I kickstarted this game a while ago and already have to starter gangs fully painted as well as a bunch of cardboard terrain to play on. I just need a few more pieces to have two full 150 ducats gangs which is enough to play through a campaign. This game is really narrative driven so I'm looking forward to this one.
  • Middle Earth Battle Strategy Game : Paint up first have of the scenarios found in The Scouring of the Shire, get required rule books, play a few Battle Company games to learn, start the campaign.
    • This is the big one, and the one I'm not sure how it will go. I have always wanted to play this game and have the scenario book, Scouring of the Shire, which I fell in love with. My plan is to play through the entire campaign, but I know how much of a massive project this is. I am still early in the planning phase for this one. I guess we will see how this goes!
Well, that is it for my projects this year? Think its doable? What are your hobby resolutions? Let me know in the comments!
